My sons (ages 6 and 4) love this new animated series, The Spectacular Spider-Man. The show is much better suited for younger audiences than Spider-Man’s last animated series, which lasted only one season on MTV in 2003.

This series features all of Spider-Man’s most famous villians, including the Green Goblin, Venom, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, Vulture, Rhino and Electro. In Volume 3, Peter Parker finds himself amidst more dangerous arch enemies, including the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and Tombstone.

If you absolutely must buy a DVD right now (birthday present, etc.) this is a good choice for Spider-Man fans. Amazon has the DVD priced $5 below suggested retail price ($19.95) and this is a good choice for young children who love Spider-Man.

The more economical decision is to wait for a DVD set release of all 26 episodes from Seasons 1 and 2, which should be priced around $30. It was announced earlier this year that Season 2 would move from the CW network to Disney XD. Season 2 is scheduled to begin in March 2009. However, the Spectacular Spider-Man ended production after completing the 26th episode (the end of Season 2). A third season might happen, depending on the ratings Season 2 gets on Disney XD.

In summary, I’d rate The Spectacular Spider-Man series five stars based on the entertainment value for young superhero fans. The shows are accessible without being too scary or adult for the under-10 audience. However, by marketing the first season into four DVDs, I deduct two stars. The series is overpriced, especially in light of the current economy.

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” has won a lot of viewers due to its modern theme and its ability to attract and entertain Spider-Man fans of all ages.

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series for the next generation. Peter Parker is no longer the bookworm that is an outcast in the whole school. No glasses, no bad clothing and no self-esteem issues like the original teenager of the comic book series. In fact, the spider he has been bit by is not radioactive but genetically altered.

This Peter Parker is cooler and even sports a man bag (or school bag) and has a birthmark.

In volume 3, Spider-Man learned that the Big Man is Tombstone and that he will be in for a major surprise when he finds out the identity of the Green Goblin.

The episodes in volume two are as follows:

Episode 7 – Catalysts – It’s the Midtown High Fall Formal and Peter Parker brings his date, Mary Jane Watson, a beautiful red head that his Aunt May set up. Meanwhile, the Green Goblin makes his appearance and he challenges the Big Man aka Tombstone.

Episode 8 – Reaction – As Dr. Otto Octavius is working on an experiment to create more super villains, the Green Goblin locks him in that experiment room and transforms Octavius to the Dr. Octopus.

Episode 9 – The Uncertainty Principle – While Colonel John Jameson tries to land his damaged space shuttle, Spider-Man battles Green Goblin and learns of his true identity.

As mentioned, “THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series that has caught a lot of attention and even IGN has voted it as #30 in their “TOP 100 BEST ANIMATED TV SHOWS” poll. Unlike other Spider-Man animated series, Spider-Man’s physique matches a young teenager (as it should).

And for us older folks used to the classic animated series or older comic books and have young children, there is always something entertaining with Spider-Man throughout the years, no matter how much it differs from what we grew up with, the soul of Spider-Man and the characters are faithful but adjusted for modern times.

And it’s definitely a series that we can watch and enjoy with our children. Another fun and exciting volume of “The Spectacular Spider-Man”.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

Video is presented in 1:78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Animation is nice and vibrant. Lines are clean, characters and objects are simple with shadows and not as much detail when it comes to the backgrounds. But the choice to do this was to replicate fluidity of Spider-Man in the films. But overall, the animation is good and clean.

Audio is presented in English 5.1 (Dolby Digital) and French (Dolby Surround).

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are no special features but trailers/previews.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” has been a pretty solid series thus far. Again, it’s not the Spider-Man I grew up with but for a new generation watching this, it’s adapted for a modern setting, its animated much differently than any Spider-Man animations in the past but everything works.

Watching it with my son, I think it was great to find a series that would be appealing to the young children, teenagers and the adults.

I’ve read several interviews with series developers Victor Cook and Greig Weisman and both are Spider-Man fans but also fans of other genres such as Hong Kong films and also grabbing ideas from different eras, may it be from “Ultimate Spider-Man”, the films and thus certain purists may have a hard time with it but again, as a fan of the comic books and the many incarnations of Spider-Man animated series, whats important is that this series remains faithful to the characters.

Sure, they may have different storylines of how the villains became to be what they are but still, the essence of who Peter Parker is and having to be this hero but yet knowing that it will affect his personal relationships with those close to him is still intact.

Episodes 7-9 was enjoyable as the previous episodes. And I like how the series captures the relationship (or lack of) the Osborn family between Harry and his father and how the Green Goblin is quite central to that storyline. And you know, when the Green Goblin is around, expect to see quite a bit of action between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin.

Also, it’s interesting to see how the Big Man (L. Thompson Lincoln) aka Tombstone will be used in the series. So, far he has been able to manhandle Spider-Man and because his company and his character is so integral in the series, especially with the other villains, it will be interesting to see how long he will stick around.

Overall, a fun and enjoyable series thus far. For those who are budget conscious, waiting for a full season may be of your best interested. I wished there was some sort of special feature included on the DVD but overall, an animated series that both young and old can enjoy. Check it out!

Unlike the angel in “Wings of Desire,” who longed to be human to experience the pleasures and satisfactions of being in a physical body, the angel in “Faraway So Close” (more a companion piece than a sequel to “Wings of Desire”) longs to be human to see through man’s eyes and discover why human beings find it so difficult to experience the spiritual.

The angel reborn into a physical body learns the harsh lessons of life: humans can barely see beyond their own physical bodies much less glimpse the spiritual world; time passes quickly and often leaves one behind in the dust without anyone noticing or caring; and the bitterness of loneliness is a terrible thing. This is in direct contradistinction to the angel in “Wings of Desire.” That angel finds joy and satisfaction in love, work and family.

Wenders, therefore, brilliantly shows us both sides of the human coin. The postive side is reflected in “Wings of Desire” and represent love and growth and the negative side is reflected in “Faraway So Close” and signify loneliness and decay. Although “Faraway So Close” sacrifices the originality that “Wings of Desire” offered us, it makes up for it by completing the human picture; for “Wings of Desire” and this film form a complete and compelling whole.

This is the sequel to Wenders 1987 masterpiece “Wings of Desire”, a film that if you haven’t seen you are only depriving yourself!

In this film viewers are returned to Berlin (albeit in the post-Cold War era), to see how Cassiel struggles with the barrier that exists between men and angels (for those of you who have not seen “Wings of Desire” – Cassiel is an angel). As with the first film, the angels in this movie watch over humans as if they are there own charges. Casssiel’s problems eminate from his desire to make contact with these people, much the same way that Damiel did in “Wings of Desire”.

Cassiel achieves his wish when he is forced to a make a split-second decision to save a young girl’s life. By interceding he becomes a part of the world he had only been able to view from afar. The rest of the movie thus focuses on how Cassiel deals with the pressures and stresses of being “human”. I don’t want to give away too much of the story so I’ll stop my description here.

There is an all star cast in this movie, such as; Nastassja Kinski, Willem Dafoe, Peter Falk, and what must have been a real coup – Mikhail Gorbachev! Don’t prejudge this film if you wasted your time on that second rate, Hollywood knock-off “City of Angels” starring Nicholas Cage. This by far a superior movie. A+++++++

I just saw a special engagement of this latest 70th Anniversary version of Pinnochio at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood in advance of the DVD re-release. Though I am happy to see the movie be given public exposure on a big theatrical screen, over the years I have seen many theatrical screenings of the movie on at least 12 different occasions including an original nitrate 3-strip Technicolor studio vault print in the early 1980’s (before the studio dismantled its last nitrate screening room) and non-digital film restorations and was shocked to see that this latest restored version has digitally tampered with the film’s original color palette for no justifiable reason.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pinocchio! Click Here

Some of the chosen character hues are modern day, popular color hues, but look out of place in this early animated classic including certain pinks, reds and blues which are reused so often in identical shades that to classic animation buffs it becomes distractingly noticeable. For those animation buffs who know about Pinnochio, Walt intentionally muted colors in some of the scarier or sadder scenes. In the restored version, for example, when Pinnochio gets locked in Geppetto’s “birdcage” the nighttime scene is bright and garish where it should intentionally be darker and muted.

The original movie had hand inked character outlines in colors that matched the interior ink colors, none of that is apparent in this restoration. The characters, though admittedly sharper and clearer, look color-wise like they were electronically tampered with, then reinserted in front of the original backgrounds.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pinocchio! Click Here

At this point, the damage is done and obviously this restoration was “stylistic.” But in any case, it might be compared with someone redoing the Mona Lisa with more modern color hues for the purpose of improving the artwork or making it more modern day acceptable. Either two things, perhaps no one at Disney was knowledgeable enough to notice what the outside restoration company was planning to do with the film in early test segments or maybe they figured that modern day DVD audiences would not know the difference or care, but this is the first “DIGITALLY RESTORED” classic Disney film that I have ever taken issue with. What a let down since it is my very favorite Disney film of all!!!

P.S. I was the founder of the former, long time Disney employees’ Animated Film Club (later referred to as the Disney Film Club) which included Disneyland and Walt Disney Studio employees. It was founded in 1976 and continued on and off for many years afterward with visits from surviving original Disney animators, screenings of rare Disney footage and more.

The one-two whammy of audience and critical indifference to “Pinocchio” and “Fantasia” killed Walt Disney’s desire to experiment with the limits of animation in the 1940s. From then on, play it safe was his motto. This may be one of the greatest tragedies to beset popular American culture in the 20th century; despite the depths of pretension and kitch in “Fantasia,” it was at least evidence of a spirited mind in pursuit of the unattained — but “Pinocchio” must have broken old Walt’s heart. There are visual effects in this movie that remained unchallenged until the digital age, and it’s worth recalling that every single one of them was drawn by hand. It has one of the most beautiful and exciting musical scores in the history of the movies (I can’t hear Cliff Edwards’ high, pure falsetto holding that final note of “When You Wish Upon a Star” without chills), a deeply plangent sense of emotion that never tips over into bathos, and a wealth of detail that is still staggering after 65 years. But it may be too dark a movie to attain the popularity of more cheerful Disney cartoons like “Snow White” — although even that one can frighten the tots. Now: where is the double-disc Special Platinum Edition???

For those who were unable to see VH1’s documentary of Zevon’s work on his final album, “The Wind,” will find themselves fortunate that this DVD is being released. While not a concert or a collection of videos, this is a big goodbye for Zevon, his family, friends, and fans.

The DVD follows Zevon’s friend and well-known columnist Dave Barry as he spends a few weeks with the ailing rocker. The heart of the “tour” lies in the recording studio, where we see Zevon jamming with Bruce Springsteen and Dwight Yoakam, discussing songs with Ry Cooder and Billy Bob Thornton, chatting with Hunter S. Thompson. Inbetween the various clips are updates on Warren’s condition; these are bittersweet reminders that a legend is slowly fading.

The focus here is entirely on “The Wind;” we hear raw clips of “Disorder in the House” (Zevond backed by The Boss” and a closing montage over which “Keep Me in Your Heart” plays, the closing track on Zevon’s final album–and his life. It is a musical epitaph which even the most hardened individual will find themselves moved by. Indeed, it is difficult to keep from feeling a twinge of guilt and sadness when watching this; it is a deeply personal insight into the twilight of a musical genius. Yet it does end on a somewhat high note; Zevon’s daughter gives birth to twins, naming one of them after her father.

The DVD will feature the entire VH1 special as well as 65 minutes of “bonus footage,” which will undoubtedly be footage left on the cutting-room floor and possibly the two videos for “Disorder in the House” and “Keep Me in Your Heart.” Any fan of Zevon will find this an essential part of their library.

This VH1 documentary is layered with interviews with Warren, family, and his friends during his last year. The better of these clips was when Warren was discussing his philosophy and he tells Letterman “enjoy every sandwich.” The documentary has a brief biography, which one would have hoped would have been longer. There is no “feel sorry for me” on this, it just shows a man facing death with his friends and family, trying to record his music as an outlet for his feelings. In the DVD Warren states that you write music because you want to share what you are feeling, and I think Warren on “The Wind” and this DVD does that very well. Do not expect a “farewell speech,” Warren has no interest. Rather he is just a man who feels lucky to have lived to 55, and wished he could have lived longer. The Vodka drinker in the 1970’s and the later family man in the 1980’s goes about life with the same energy he always has during the recording of “The Wind.” At the end of this, I wondered if I could have been as brave as Warren to face the world with humor in the face on my own mortality.

Also interviewed and featured is Warren’s children, friends, clips with Warren on Letterman, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Don Henley, Tom Petty, Bruce Singsteen, Billy Bob Thronton, Joe Walsh, and Dwight Yoakam.

Besides the extended version of the VH1 Inside Out, there is:

-An hour of bonus footage
-”Keep me in your heart” music video
-”Disorder in tbe house” music video
-Bonus clips from the VH1 Special (showing Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, ect. recording with Warren)
-Warren’s home videos

Movie Title: A Chorus Line
Average customer review:

A Chorus Line is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download A Chorus Line

The day the film version of “A Chorus Line” opened across the country, director Richard Attenborough was interviewed by Jane Pauley on the Today Show. “And what’s this film really about?” asked Jane. Sir Richard answered, “It’s about kids trying to break into show business.”

And there you have everything that’s right and wrong about the film. Some have enjoyed this film (as you can see from some of the other reviews), and even been inspired by the inside look at young professionals trying to make it to the top, or even just get in the door. I’m very happy for them.

The only problem is, that’s NOT what A Chorus Line is about – at least the Pulitzer prize winning stage musical conceived by the late Michel Bennett. And if the movie’s director is that far off base, well what you end up with is confusing series of characters and stories that don’t seem to have a lot of point to them, other than all these folks are auditioning together one afternoon.

Kids breaking into show business? No, A Chorus Line is (was) about top-of-their-career professional dancers trying to get one more lousy job to keep food on the table and injuries at bay, letting them work one more year. And asking the question “Is it really worth the physical pain, humiliation, and invisibility?” Most had already let go of the dream of being a star – that would have happened by now if it was in the cards. No they were dancers – but what did that mean?

Although the creators thought they were putting a project together in workshop that would appeal only to the Broadway community – audiences strongly identified with the dancer’s stories. The audition became a metaphor for any place where people are treated as interchangeable commodities, whether its on a stage, in an office, or in a factory. We’re all “on the line”.

It’s this core that is missing from the film. The stage musical has three pivotal group numbers: the opening “I Hope I Get It”, “Montage”, and “What I Did For Love”. The rest are individual character songs. (The popular number “One”, is really outside the plot, more of a curtain call than a book number.) “What I Did for Love” is practically the emotional climax of the show – the dancers reaching for an answer to the inevitable question of “why do this?” In the film, however, it’s a love ballad for Cassie, musing over her former love for Zach. On stage, the heart of the show is “Montage”, a single musical number about 15 to 20 minutes long takes the characters stories from the pain and wonder of childhood related in the first half, through puberty, and into young adulthood. It contains the song “Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen”, as well as several other themes. It’s not in the movie – replaced with a new (and much less ambitious) song “Surprise”. That leaves only the opening number, which thankfully is still there. Unfortunately it pails in comparison to Bob Fosse’s “appropriation” of the idea that he used to open his film “All That Jazz” in 1980.

With the major themes shuffled off to the background, what you are left with is the dancer’s colorful stories, and the Cassie / Zach failed love affair melodrama pushed to the fore. The love story isn’t any more compelling here than it was on Broadway, where Bennett wisely kept it in the background, only using to add an extra layer of tension to the proceedings. But it is good to see the individual dancer’s stories and songs can still impress in the film. The late Greg Burge is riveting in what, on Broadway, was the tiny role of Ritchie. The film gives him his own number, the aforementioned “Surprise”. Michael Blevins is sweet as the young Mark, experiencing his first audition. Janet Jones lights up the screen in the tiny part of Judy, demonstrating why she was the sole newcomer to go on to other films (and to marry star hockey player Wayne Gretzky). Broadway veteran Terence Mann (Cats, Les Miserables, Man of La Mancha) is memorable in the small part of Larry, the assistant choreographer with a heart of gold. Cameron English gives a heartfelt rendition of what is probably the greatest piece of writing in the canon of American musicals: Nicholas Dante’s story of Paul, the young gay dancer who’s family disowned him after seeing him perform in a drag show.

Others don’t fare as well, however. Audrey Landers is exactly the WRONG type of vixenish actress to play Ms. Dance-Ten, Looks-Three. The song comes off as vulgar and slutty. It only worked on stage because these shocking things were coming out of the mouth of a petite blond Drew Barrymore look-alike in disarming pigtails. And Alyson Reed, a wonderful dancer, doesn’t really register as Cassie. Perhaps if a star had been put in the part, it would have justified all the extra screen time devoted to Cassie’s chorus girl to star to chorus girl story. But Alyson doesn’t have the right charisma or face for the camera. Choreography was handed over to Jeffery Hornady, who was the man of the moment after the success of his Flashdance numbers. Big mistake. Obviously Mr. Hornaday had never see a Broadway show, for the dances look like outtakes from a Wham! video.

So there you have it – add this one to the list of landmark Broadway musicals butchered on film, along side Gypsy, A Little Night Music, and Man of La Mancha. Maybe someone can convince Chicago film director Rob Marshall to give us a television version of Chorus Line? It really deserves a do-over.

Back stage note: When Universal studios bought the rights to Chorus Line in 1976, they also hired Michael Bennett as producer (and implicitly as director). Michael spent over a year and a half working on various versions of the screenplay, but eventually got tired of “taking meetings” and left LA for New York where he went to work on Dream Girls. One concept for the movie was to depart from the original setting and make it about dancers auditioning for the film version of “Chorus Line”. He had already approached two hot newcomers to participate. He wanted Mikhail Baryshnikov as Zach, and in a gender switch, Saturday Night Fever star John Travolta in Cassie role. Already that sounds like a more interesting movie.

Good Lord, where do I start?

I’ve held out seeing this “film” because I’ve seen the Broadway production, as well as a worn-out black and white beta-video version of the original cast, and I’m afraid little was left of the original in this “screen version”. I also have a story in my head told to me by an acting teacher who saw the original production at The Public in NY before it moved to Broadway. He told me he’d seen it with a friend and both walked around the Village, down to the Financial District and then home to 46th Street in silence because they’d been so moved by what they saw.

The film version is a good example of what too much success can do to something. As other people have suggested – it might have been better to film the stage version, or better yet make a documentary about the ground breaking “work-shopping” the show went through in development. It revolutionzed the way plays and musicals were conceived.

I don’t mean to diminish the talent of any cast member, (well… I could have done without Judy Landers – too obvious a choice, and a little too clumsy a performance, as well as Mr. Boring-Hollywood himself, Michael Douglas) as they all, of course, excellent dancers and singers – I think some were pulled from the Broadway cast. I liked the actress who plays Cassie very much, but I didn’t like Michael Douglas, and I really hated the fact that they chose to focus on the “Love Story” of Zach & Cassie. Get over it! It was an unbalanced relationship! They probably would be at each others throats during the rehearsals for the show Zach is directing, and when the show ends I imagine Cassie saying to Sheila (her new best friend) “Thank God THAT’S over! I mean… ZACH! WHAT WAS I THINKING?!”

Other reviews have captured a lot of things I could say. If you like this film – more power to you, but know if you watch it that it is SO not what the original was. The stage show came at a time when Broadway was in a slump, and some of the themes; homosexuality, sexual experimentation, plastic surgery, etc. were topics that existed but were still were very taboo, and capable of shocking a 70’s audience. It had more relevance back then, because it seemed that the dancers’ predicament was a metaphor for “Broadway” itself… what do you do when this is all over? There was still some romance in being a “Broadway Dancer”. Currently Broadway seems to be nothing but revivals and corporate sponsored “machine musicals” that will make money no matter what.

Try to see a touring version, or get the play and read in conjuntion with the original cast recording.

I had high hopes for this one as animation can look so pristine in BD, but I was in for a shock. Sony Animation was behind this, but it had the whole Cartoon Network look to it instead. The main voice talents from the first film did not come over, nor did any of the writing/production staff (and it shows).

The story is just ok, entailing friends helping and rescuing each other with plenty of adventure and rabbit abuse. One of the main characters is a dachshund so apparently the “wiener” humor is what passes for hilarity these days. While it has been playing in the store kids of all ages are entranced by it but the parents haven’t been thrilled with the parts they have seen. The “..that lady pulled my wiener..” and “..my beautiful rack..” lines raise a few parent’s eyebrows so it hasn’t exactly been a hit like I had hoped.

The BD supplements are painful, including “deleted scenes” which were hand sketched and not worth the time. The “Weenie Arcade” has a horribly spliced “Who Let the Dogs Out” video by the Baha Men, a how to draw the animals tutorial, and a featurette about the faces behind the voices.

I loved Hoodwinked, even with that style of animation, and OS2 looks similar in nature (no pun meant) but is much less of a quality film. I have read where people say this an ideal family film, which nothing really offends me so I would watch it with my kids, but needless to say I lost a few rentals playing it in the store. And for a BD, not one of the memorable ones.

Aside from the trite story line and really cheap animation the real reason for watching this animation was going to be it’s anticipated hilarious humor. So here’s the humor count: Half chuckle 10 minutes into movie; another half chuckle around 23 and again 45 minutes. Fell asleep between 23 and 45 so there may be more. Story was resolved at about 65 minutes and the final 20 minutes was pointless filler. Suggestion: Stop at Open Season 1 if you want to be left with fond memories.

I just saw the DVD and was surprised at the power of this film.

The Book of John is treated like the finely wrought piece of literature it is. The material is adapted with fidelity as a self-contained work. Seeing it as a complete story is much different than taking elements of the life of Jesus out of context.

A lot can be said about the adaptation, directing, acting, production design and music — but what stands out is that the sum of these parts is much greater than the separate elements, as fine as they are. Dare I say this is a work of inspiration?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gospel of John! Click Here

The role of Jesus in world history deserves consideration in the light of the extreme religious fanatacism rampant today from the so-called People of the Book. Who was this person who claimed to be Son of God and Son of man? Factually, the apostle John details only a few points in the life of the Man who conquered death. But John says “Believe in the resurrection and you have eternal life now.” How radical is that?

“The Gospel of John” does not shy away from a blunt account of the role of the Roman and Jewish powers in the murder of Jesus; however, the movie makes it abundantly clear why the Pharisees saw Jesus as a threat. In today’s world He’s still a threat to those who seek power alone,

For me, what jumped out of the film and still echoes in my mind is the several times Jesus asks, “Why do you hate me?” That question reverberates in today’s headlines.

In a politically correct world, we no longer have public conversations about the subjective truth of the life of Jesus. Or the meaning of that solitary life. With advances in quantum physics, we consider the fundamental nature of of matter, time and consciousness. The Gospel of John touches on all these things with sublime power and insight.

Like in any other movie, this one richly rewards the suspension of disbelief. Surrender to a remarkable film that will haunt you long after final fade out. Finally I understand why those early followers of Jesus said: “We are not as those who have no hope.”

The original DVD release (quickly out of print) has three discs with detailed extras that cover all the major production elements.

A later release has a two hour version of the film, very nicely edited, as well as the original three hour theatrical version.

Both versions of the film are beautifully transferred in a widescreen format that fills newer 16:9 screens.

I review DVDs for a local paper. I watch a lot of movies and “The Gospel of John” is among the best films I’ve seen in the last year. It’s actually about something profound and acutely relevant. And it is rendered with style and grace.

If you’ve seen Jesus’ crucifixion in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” see the rest of the story in “The Gospel of John.”

The Gospel of John is, in my humble opinion, the best Biblical-based movie since The Gospel According to St Matthew. The Gospel of John was filmed in Toronto using unknown actors and a British director. The intent of the Producers was to present the text of the book with no embelishments or viewpoints, letting the words speak for themselves and leaving the viewer to draw their own conslusions. The film accomplished this beautifully. The result is a powerful presentation that, while three hours long, seemed to fly by. I never got bored or tired, and felt like I had been there 2 hours or less.
Sadly, it gets mediocre reviews from the “sophisticated” reviewers who cannot appreciate the simple beauty and power of the words as written by John without the aid of post-modern interpretation.
I understand it is only showing in limited theaters in the South, then going straight to video. If it is in a theatre in your city, go see it. If not, get the video when it comes out. It is well worth the price.

What I enjoyed most about Sid and Nancy was the profile of the Sex Pistols who (unfortunately) are only a vicarious part of the plot. I know that Johnny Lydon did not approve of this film, but I absolutely loved Schofield’s portrayal of him here. In fact, he almost steals the spotlight from the train wreck that is the relationship between the main protagonists. I also thought that technically this film was outstanding. My favorite scene involved the press/party boat. After it was forcibly docked, the shot of Sid and Nancy gliding through the melee was exceptional. This movie has something in common with all period pieces we remember–it is incredibly well-done. My own appreciation for the film, however, was sabotaged by the fact that I was not even remotely interested in the love affair between Sid and Nancy. I found the gradual disintegration of their lives to rather depressing.

Is it full of historic inaccuracies? Sure. Is it an accurate portrayal and timeline of the events as they occured? From time to time. Was it a thoroughly intriguing journey, seen at “ground level” of what is arguably one of the most notorious “crash and burns” stories of our time? Without doubt. Did Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb accurately portray Sid and Nancy? In essence, YES. The soundtrack (provided by ex-Clash member Joe Strummer), the lighting, and settings serve to push you (I have to admit, for me sometimes unwillingly) through the fall and then plummet of Sid and Nancy. The movie was in turn serious, grotesque, cartoonish, erotic, embarassing, fascinating, and beautiful. All of it seemed appropriate. Throughout, I felt I was in a seat, right behind Sid and Nancy’s, on a wild roller coaster ride with them. I just seemed inevitable that it ended the way it did. The story never leaves the rollercoaster tracks. The world just seemed to rush by faster and faster, until it is just a blur. You can’t help but feel uncomfortable as you watch the lives of these two characters reduced to a hopeless,”from high to high” existence in room 100 of New York’s famous Chelsea Hotel. (Watch for Iggy Pop and his wife in a quick cameo in the hallway at the Chelsea) You realize that Sid Vicious is a modern “Everyman” representing every “famous” and non-famous junkie caught in a great downward spiral. The movie provided, for me, unforgettable images. For all of the other elements, this movie is in the end a love story. These two tragic characters are left with only the deep love for each other and addiction. The love was not enough for Nancy and too much for Sid.

Ah! My Goddess is a wildly popular series that started life out as a manga before making the jump to anime. A 5 episode OVA series was released in the early 90s as was a motion picture. Now US distributor Media Blasters releases stateside the 26 episode television series that aired last season in Japan.

The series stay very true to the long running manga. For the uninitiated, Ah! My Goddess tells the comedic story of young Morisato, a struggling college kid trying to survive his schoolwork and at times his roommates. One day while trying to order takeout food he dials the wrong number and gets the Goddess Helpline. Enter beautiful and sweet Goddess Belldandy. Belldandy grants his wish which is that she stays with him. This simple action sets up a series of comedic and sometimes touching events as the two characters budding romance takes off. Morisato moves into his own place which gradually gets crowded thanks to Belldandy’s relatives coming to crash and sometimes live. This anime has harem show elements but stays away from fan service, prefering to focus on the romantic/comedic events of the character’s lives.

The latest TV series is really a visual treat. The character designs are a bit more angular compared to the original OVA series but the animation is fluid and the colours are truly brilliant. Musically the opening and closing themes are catchy. For voice actor fans the entire original Japanese cast has been brought back to reprise their roles. For dub fans Media Blasters brings on board a great English crew who do a great job of capturing the character’s spirits.

Ah! my Goddess is a fun and entertaining series that shouldnt be missed by any anime fan. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

This is the Ah! My Godess the TV series originally aired in Japan in 2005. This series pretty much follows the manga. What happens when a college student wishes a Goddess to live with him forever? You get to see the fateful meeting of Belldandy and Keiichi in the first episode, then follow their adventures with friends and enemies, and finally reach the climatic ending with the Terrible Master story arc in the manga.

The TV series was originally aired in Japan in a cropped, 4:3 format. The Media Blasters release is in the original 16:9 format, just like the Region 2 DVD.

The box set edition consists of volume 1 DVD in a collector’s box, and a Belldandy cell phone strap imported from Japan.

A family has been cursed by a woman killed by a town crowd, Luz Maria plays the new generation who’s child is cursed to die by the weiler who has come back to life centuries later to carry on her promise.

Unfortunately this is one of those films that have a good title and cover but with a boring plot line and storyline. I watched it only once and I could not ever see it again. I hope those who view it do enjoy unlike me.
